Fat Sister phoned just now and said, “You know when you had those two black eyes?” I was a bit puzzled because this was months ago, but I said yes. She went on, “It would seem from what I’ve learnt today that I might have missed, in my own sister, a very obvious sign of a Basilar skull fracture.” She explained that she’d just seen a patient with similar symptoms and a colleague had pointed out that ‘racoon eyes’ often indicated this type of injury. Apparently there wouldn’t have been much difference between how this should’ve be treated and what we did at the time, but it left me thinking in future I might seek a second, non-sibling, opinion.
