I went with Poppy to get my hair cut earlier. In the salon they had a selection of children’s board games which included the classic Operation.

Operation’s been around for years and involves removing plastic body parts from various holes in a sickly looking man. Your one surgical instrument is a pair of tweezers and you have to avoid touching the side of the holes – if you do, a buzzer sounds and the poor man’s nose lights up.

It’s a game that calls for a steady hand and a calm approach, so it’s not one I’m neurologically designed to excel at. We played anyway, and had a laugh in the process.

Unsurprisingly Poppy won, but what surprised us both was how pleased she was with her victory – she was punching the air with delight.

Thankfully, the people at the salon made my hair cut a much simpler operation and I’m very pleased with the results.
