I’ve made no secret of how geeky I’ve become about wheelchairs, so it won’t surprise you to know I’ve just had a new feature added to mine – not that many people will notice.

But I can feel a big difference, quite literally, because today’s new addition is a pair of thumb-guards. They consist of smooth plastic rings that go all the way round the wheel between the hand rim (the bit I push on) and the wheel. It means my thumbs can’t slip between the wheel and the rim and that I can’t stub my fingers on the metal bits that hold the wheels on. Overall it makes it much more comfortable to push myself along.

While my new thumb-guard doesn’t mean I can do anything new, it does make the things I do already feel much easier. The Thumb War is over!
