Rise Of The Rebels

This spring we launched Rebel Play, a creative research project to collect the positive play memories of disabled children and adults and use them to inspire new accessible activities and experiences.

Since April we’ve interviewed over 20 disabled people – the youngest contributor so far is 3 and the oldest is 75. These play memories have been carefully summarised in plain language, and two incredible visual artists, Amber Anderson and Ifeoma Orjiekwe, have created an image for each one.

We’ve shared this archive with four disabled artists, Aby Watson, Miss Jacqui, Linda Bell and Sam Metz and they’re busy creating new play experiences. Their work will be shared at ‘Rise of the Rebels’, our first Rebel Play event, which is taking place near the Oval in London on Friday 1st November 2024.

Come and join us for a day of multi-sensory play. Transform yourself into a rebel with performance artist Aby, use your body and wheels to make new art at Miss Jacqui’s ‘No Paint Brush Paint Station’. Help Linda make a giant sculpture and explore Sam’s ‘Tippy Flower’. The Touretteshero team will also be running a Playful Potion activity where you can mix up ingredients to make your perfect play recipe.

Rise of the Rebels is for disabled and non-disabled children and young people aged 6 – 25. Younger children can attend too but will need to be closely supervised by their adult. All children attending the event will need to come with an adult over 18.

A poster with an orange border for Touretteshero’s first Rebel Play event – Rise of The Rebels, text reads: An inclusive play event created by Touretteshero as part of the rebel play project featuring new interactive artworks by four disabled artists. There is an illustration showing a group of 10 playful figures indifferent positions some jumping, some using manual and powered wheelchairs some sitting, some using canes. There is more text that reads: Friday 1st November: 12.30-3.30pm Oasis Play, Bolton Crescent Adventure Playground, 64 Bolton Crescent, London, SE5 OSE. The event is free and for ages 6-25. Three logos are at the bottom of the poster – Oasis Play on the left, Rebel Play centrally positioned and the Touretteshero logo is on the right.

This all takes place at Oasis Bolton Crescent Adventure Playground – an amazing indoor and outdoor adventure play space. It’s wheelchair accessible, has a fence all the way round it and has a range of accessible toilets including a changing place toilet. There will also be a chill-out tent for anyone who wants a break. An easy-read guide is available here.

It’s free to attend but you do need to book. The sign-up form for the event is here. Please get in touch if the form isn’t accessible, or if you have any questions.

Please note that adults over 25 will not be able to attend without a child, unless they have contributed to the project and have received a specific invite.

Rebel Play’s already generated incredible conversations, insights and knowledge, as well as lots of laughter and joy and I’m confident that Rise of the Rebels will create loads more.
