The word respite isn’t one I like very much. It’s often used to describe the break carers need from caring. An online dictionary definition I found defines it as meaning “A short period of rest or relief from something difficult or unpleasant.” When it’s linked to disability it implies that caring for someone with a disability is burdensome and unpleasant, and that’s why I don’t like it.

However, Leftwing Idiot desperately needs some respite. He needs a break from ‘something difficult’ but it’s not me – it’s the disturbed nights and physical exertion of supporting me during the acute ticcing fits I’ve been having over the last week.

Tonight I’m going to stay at my sister’s. King Russell will help me out when I need it and Leftwing Idiot can enjoy an unbroken night.
